Who Is God? A Study of the Godhead-Part 2

PictureDid Jesus Claim To Be God?
Consider the unique properties of water for a moment. According to the conditions surrounding it, water can be an invisible vapor, a visible liquid, or hard, cold, breakable ice. This liquid can become vapor or ice, and return to liquid again, by simply changing the temperature; But it's all still water.

In Part 1 of this study, we read that there is only one God. He is an invisible, eternal Spirit, who fills heaven and earth. But is that all there is to God? Is God only an invisible Spirit? Let's take a look...

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
(1 Timothy 3:16)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made... And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.  (John 1:1-3; 14)

According to these and many other verses, the eternal, invisible, immortal Spirit became a visible, mortal man. Most of us believe that nothing is impossible with God, so this isn't a real stretch of the imagination. But what regularly blows my mind is why God would do this. The answer goes back to what God is: God is love (1 Jn. 4:8). Let's see how God fulfills his own prophecy...

Old Testament                                              New Testament

The Word of God

Genesis 3:8   And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
John 1:1-3; 14   In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made... And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

The Lamb of God

Genesis 22:7-8 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Emmanuel: God With Us

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Matthew 1:18-23 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

The Might God, The Everlasting Father

Isaiah 9:6   For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Godhead Study
Liquid, Ice, or Vapor; All Water
John 14:6-11   Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

A spirit doesn't have flesh and blood, but without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins and no redemption for us. God (The Invisible, Immortal Spirit) was manifested in the flesh (The Mortal, Visible, Flesh, Son) to die for our sins... In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. (Colossians 1:14-17)

Who Is God? A Study of the Godhead

PictureDid Jesus Clam To Be God?
When Jesus Christ walked the earth some 2000+ years ago, there was much confusion as to who he really was. There is still much confusion today as to who Christ the Son of God is and his relationship with God and the Holy Ghost. Out of the twelve disciples, only Peter understood who Jesus was and here's why...

When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven
.  (Matthew 16:13)

Understanding who Jesus Christ is requires revelation given from above. And revelation begins with the Word of God: The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. (Psalms 119:130)

Let's stay in the scriptures and let the Word of God describe God is to us.

Who Is God? What is God?

Jeremiah 23:24
Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.

John 4:24
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

God is a Spirit who fills heaven and earth. His Spirit is all around us.

How many Gods are there?

Deuteronomy 6:4
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

Isaiah 44:8
Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.

Malachi 2:10
Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

There is only one God. He is our creator and there is none beside him.

Is God a Trinity?

Nowhere in the scriptures is God ever called a "trinity" or "triune" in nature. And since God doesn't refer to himself as a trinity, perhaps we shouldn't either. Adding to the scriptures isn't wise and tends to create confusion.

Let's consider the attributes of God which may expand our understanding of who he is.

God is invisible:

1 John 4:12

No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

God who is a Spirit doesn't have a body:

Luke 24:39
Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

God Is Immortal - He Cannot Die:

1 Timothy 1:17

Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

God Cannot Lie:

Titus 1:2
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

Got Is All-Knowing

1 John 3:20
For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

God is Love:

1 John 4:16
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

God Is A Consuming Fire

Deuteronomy 4:24
For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.

There are many other scriptures that describe God but this is a great start. There is only one God and there is none beside him. God is a Spirit who knows everything about us past, present and future, yet loves us. He created the heavens and the earth by himself, yet cares for each of us. Our God is an awesome God, worthy of our respect, honor and our worship. Download a Free Bible Study about the Godhead on our Bible Study Page.

Basic Overview of the New Testament

New Testament BibleBasic Overview of the New Testament
Most of us know that the Holy Bible is not just a single book. It's a collection of 66 books divided unevenly into 2 parts; The Old Testament and the New Testament. This post is just a simple bird's eye view of the scriptures to us who live on this side of the wonderful resurrection of Christ.

Leading into this overview, let's make sure we're on the same page about a very important factor: Though God used multiple writers to get his Word to us, he retains authorship. The Bible is God's word to man, not man's word to man. It is without error or flaw.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.  (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. (2 Peter 1:21)

Let us not fall into the trap of thinking that the Bible is the product of a bunch of old religious men from long ago. Instead it is the powerful Word of God that is sharper than any two-edged sword and still a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path!

Basic Overview of the New Testament

Picture
The Gospels.
The first 4 books are referred to the “The Gospels”. Each book is entitled The Gospel According to Matthew or Mark or Luke or John. Here we get overlapping accounts of the life, ministry, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. These are not comprehensive accounts. Even in the Gospel of John we read, “And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” (John 20:30-31)

Though these 4 books are considered the beginning of the New Testament, the actual New Testament doesn't start until after the death of Jesus Christ, or the end of these books. Testaments or Wills are not in effect until after the death of the testator. Nearly all of Jesus' teachings, miracles, and ministry are under the Old Testament.

Acts of the Apostles.
The most pivotal book of the New Testament in my opinion is the Book of Acts. Here's where we read about how the apostles carried out the commands of Christ. Want to know exactly how the gospel of Christ was preached to the world? Read the book of Acts! What I find interesting, and a stark contrast from today is that the same gospel message was preached everywhere it was preached in Acts.

Jesus gave the keys to the kingdom to Peter who preached the first New Testament gospel in Acts 2. Philip preached the same gospel at Samaria in Acts 8. Paul preached the same message many years later at Ephesus in Acts chapter 19 and beyond. And those who received the word responded in the same way. The book of Acts gives us the blueprint for what to preach since it would be through the apostles' word we would believe on Jesus - and they did it without PA systems, HD monitors, fundraisers or even pocket New Testaments!

The Epistles – Letters of Encouragement and Instruction.
22 books of the New Testament are devoted to teaching, admonishment, correction and encouragement to whole churches or individual believers. Paul the apostle was inspired to write most of them, but the Lord used other writers including Luke, Peter, James and John as well.

Keep in mind that these letters are not written to the general public. This is private mail to fellow believers who have already obeyed the gospel that was preached in the book of Acts. Within these letters we read about how to treat one another in the Kingdom of God, how to be a light to the world around us, severe warnings against departing from the faith, and how to always be ready for the soon coming of Christ.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15)

May our knowledge go far beyond a basic overview of the New Testament. May we search the scriptures daily for treasure the way miners diligently seek for gold!

Daily Devotion: How To Pray & Read The Bible Every Day for Christians

8/18/2013

Picture
Are you the type of Christian who loves God but doesn't regularly pray and/or read the Bible on your own? It's something you do along with others at church, but it's not part of your daily life? If so, take heart! This isn't a guilt trip blog post, but a reality check with a few helpful tips.

I've been there and have to admit sometimes I still let my everyday priorities get out of whack!

I don't think we need to be sold on the benefits of a daily devotion to prayer and Bible reading. What we need is a way to make them part of our daily life. A way that works for each of us personally. Allow me to offer a few ideas that have helped me to be more consistently in the word and prayer.

Perspective. Way too often I think of prayer as some service I do for God like a favor. The opposite is much more true. Prayer is deliberate communication with the Lord. It's how we acknowledge him in all our ways so he can direct our paths. If we don't remain connected to him through prayer and interaction with his word, we will not have his mind. We'll have our carnal, fleshy, wicked mind...

For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.  (Romans 8:5-8)

Position. The Bible doesn't make any one position (kneeling, bowing, etc., ) a requirement. I remember in a prayer meeting years ago, a fellow minister regularly walked around the room and prayed. That was new to me, but soon I was doing it. I found it particularly helpful during early morning prayer! Don't be bound by the idea that one physical position is more “holy” than others. God is more interested in the position of our heart then the position of our bodies.

There are times when kneeling is absolutely the right way to approach our God. Sometimes we need to humble ourselves and honor him as The Almighty God who has no equal. There is none beside him; No one above him. He is our friend, but he is also our King.

Time of Day. Starting the day with prayer is always a good thing, but what if you're not a morning person? Since the Bible doesn't stipulate any one time of day over another for prayer, we shouldn't either. Some of us are sharp in the morning, while others are night owls. You might be at your best during a midday work break. No matter the time of day, be realistic with who you are and make an appointment with the Lord when you're most fresh.

Prayer Length. Here's a question for you: Who is going to be more physically fit: the person who works out ten minutes a day everyday, or the person who exercises for an hour once a week?

The Bible doesn't command us to pray for a certain amount of time, but our love for God should motivate us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17). If you're like me, you've set some unrealistic prayer goals for yourself only to fall short and feel guilty. How about we do something very different. Let's lay a foundation of some ultra-realistic goals that are simple to reach and build from there. Consider this: The person who prays 10 minutes a day for 7 days will have prayed longer than the person who prays for an hour once a week. The same goes for Bible reading. I agree that it's the quality and not the quantity of time that's important, but most of us have neither. Look at this as a place to start.

Tools. For Bible reading, I use the One-Year Bible (KJV) by Tyndale House Publishers. Everyday I get portion of the OT, NT, Psalms and Proverbs. It's all in one book and at the end of the year, I've read through the whole Bible. For about the last 15 years, the One-Year Bible and coffee is how I've started my mornings.

If a Bible reading chart works for you, great. Use it! If you'd prefer to take a book of the Bible and get into it, do that! Whatever tool or plan works for you, use it to help you stay in the Bible daily.

Picture
For Prayer, I'm going to suggest a timer. (A timer?) We can do almost anything for 10 minutes, can't we? But how often have we said or thought, “I don't have time to pray.” I think there's something about us psychologically that needs to know how long something is going to last before we commit. "2 hours, are you kidding??? 10 minutes? Okay, I can do that."
Weebly - The Easiest Way To Create A Website
Using an ultra-realistic strategy, I suggest setting a timer for 10 minutes, then turning our attention to heaven. If regular prayer is completely new, then set it for 5 minutes for a whole week, then bump it up to 10 minutes.

Try this:  Start by praying the scriptures. Open your KJV Bible to Psalm 103 and read out loud of the praises to God and the promises from God. Then confess any sins, seek forgiveness, make your requests known, praise the Lord for his goodness, then be still and listen. Prayer is 2-way communication. Give him time to speak. You will be amazed just how fast 5 or 10 minutes passes. You'll soon find that the timer will go off, but you won't be done. 10 minutes will become an effortless 15 minutes or more a day and your relationship with Christ will deepen dramatically. In his presence, you'll discover greater peace in your life while hearing his voice more frequently throughout the day.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. (Psalms 16:11)

Disturbing Negative Side Effects of Pornography

6/9/2013

Picture
I'm not going to dwell on the obvious:  pornography is sin and should be avoided the same way Superman avoids Kryptonite. But avoiding it is nearly impossible since we're surrounded by 50 shades of porn on a daily basis. Sex sells. Always has and always will, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Woe is the man who has a little extra time and a high-speed internet connection – believer or unbeliever – for he may soon himself where he ought not be. It takes a real determination to remain pure and unspotted from the world especially while surfing on the internet.

But aside from the sinfulness, there are some sobering, even disturbing negative side effects of porn that many of us have never thought about. Dots in our lives we wouldn't think were connected. And this isn't just a noteworthy problem for young males. Men of all ages and even women are subject to eyes that wander.

I read a news article recently that had a link to a video about the harmful effects of pornography. The entertaining speaker presented some truly cautionary information, not from a spiritual perspective, but from a neurological one. The impact of pornography and associated activities are remarkable. Most people caught up in porn already know it's wrong spiritually. They may even be aware of its damaging effects on relationships. But they may have never considered how personally harmful it is physically, mentally and emotionally. The short video below is well worth your time.

If you've found this eye-opening or helpful, pass it along. Pornography is by far the most searched for item on the web and if this information is accurate, it's slowly killing us. From the scriptures we already know that pornography is sin and the wages of sin is death. Now there appears to be more evidence that this is a scientific fact as well. Perhaps this kind of logical information will help a person to be more like a real Superman - godly, productive, and a light to those around him.

But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren.   (James 1:14-16)

Start A Church, Look For A Church, Or Preach The Gospel? Listen to Audio!

6/2/2013

Picture
I get emails from all over the world. One question that I see frequently is if I know of a home church in a particular area. Great question, but the short answer is no. I don't have a directory of house churches. And since most churches that meet in houses don't have websites or a listing in the phone book, it might be difficult to track one down.

This situation along with other promptings in my heart have compelled me to go back into the scriptures about starting churches or even looking for churches. Most of us have been taught to go look for a church if we move to a new area or if we feel to change where we fellowship. If we have a traditional ministry background, we may consider starting a church. But is that what the Bible tells us to do? Did Jesus Christ commission his disciples to go into all the world and start churches?

This isn't a trick question at all. As a matter of fact, it might be an "A-ha" moment. If you left a denominational church, why did you leave? Why did you leave the comfort of your own pew for something else? Let me further bait the hook with this: If you left because you didn't agree with teachings coming over the pulpit or from headquarters, is it possible there are many more things yet to be revealed to us as we dig into the scriptures for ourselves? I believe there is. Many wonderful things!
The Easiest Way to Create a Website. Weebly.com

This home church journey for me has been a bit of a wilderness experience - but a needful one. God has been faithfully showing me some basic truths in dry places. The bummer is that I'm a slow learner. The praise is the lights are finally on and someone is home! I realize it's easy to get the cart before the horse and overlook some important basics. Rather than write all this out, I've created a short audio for you. It's less than 10 minutes long and may be as eye opening to you as it was to me. You might see a whole new answer to the question of looking for a church or starting one...

If you skipped over the audio, please go back and listen. I'd like to get your thoughts on all this and to know if this makes sense to you from the scriptures. Should we look for another church? Should we seek to start a church? What does the Bible say? What do you say?

Please participate in our poll. Do you prefer videos or audios for Bible studies?
Then leave your comments!

Thanks.

Departing From The Word of God In The Last Days

"...Nevertheless when the
Son of man cometh, shall he find
faith on the earth?"

Luke 18:8

Most of us can read the signs of the times and know that we're living in the last days. Nations are rising against nations, major earthquakes are picking up pace, corruption is everywhere, just like the Bible has predicted. Here's another disturbing part of last days prophecy that Paul passed on to Timothy: Christians departing from the Word of God...

I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

 (2 Timothy 4:1-4)
Weebly - The Easiest Way To Create A Website

If the Word of God has lost its impact in our society, is it because many of us don't read and study the Bible for ourselves? Is it on our coffee tables but missing our hearts?

We can't share with others what we don't have ourselves, nor can we walk with power if we're not plugged into the source. How will we reap the wonderful promises if we don't have faith? For faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Instead of being a witness unto Jesus in a declining culture, we'll go down the drain with it. We'll  compromise truth for something that sounds good to our flesh and like Lott living in Sodom, we'll be thermometers in society reflecting the temperature, rather than godly thermostats setting the temperature.

2 Corinthians 13:5 says to “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves...”

Picture
I remember a friend telling me that they had grown up thinking one way about sin, but after more experience in the world they no longer felt that “being gay” was a sin. This seems to be a growing trend – not just in society, but the church as well. Here's what caught my attention: my friend didn't say that they'd changed their mind after more Bible study and prayer. No, it was due to “having lived” and becoming more “open minded”.

Then this morning, I heard of another politician who has changed their position on “gay marriage” because their son confessed his is “gay.” But has God altered his definition of marriage? Has God traded righteousness for tolerance? Let's see...

Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

(Matthew 10:34-37)

"You're being judgmental!" Really? Speaking truth isn't judgmental because truth isn't a respecter of persons. Truth applies to all of us! The Word of God is still truth and it will outlast heaven and earth. Our works will be judged by the Word - The Merciful, Loving Jesus Christ Himself - not by society, nor by a teary eyed relative, nor by a pope, pastor or president.

No one has ever compromised or toyed with the scriptures to their benefit, nor have the obedient escaped blessings. Friend, let us not be swayed by anything or anyone. Instead, let us be those who will live and love righteously, be blessed abundantly, and inherit life eternally. Let us not be among those departing the Word of God, and among the many who didn't take the Bible seriously...

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.   (Matthew 7:21-23)

Body Ministry & Full Church Participation

2/18/2013

We've often heard that the church is the body of Christ. Christ is the head and each one of us makes up the individual members of his body. Okay, so what? What does that really mean?

Let's consider our own bodies for a moment. We move our fingers, scratch our knees, breathe in through our noses, wiggle our toes, etc. All of these simple coordinated actions originate from a desire within our own heads to accomplish something. That's how our bodies work and how things should work between Christ our head, and the church his body.

So how should we as the church function like a body? Take a look at 1 Corinthians 14:26

How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

I believe most of us have a limited perspective of full church participation. We think of our place in the church as “row four, third chair from the aisle” rather than as a teacher, elder, prophet, etc., Our experience is as a member of an audience watching ministry take place on a stage because that's what we've been taught.

But is this the Lord's perspective? The more I study and experience myself, the more I see that God's plan is full body ministry and participation! Let's look at 3 key ingredients to the verse above:

1. Every one of you.
Most churches are organized around a pastor and his sermon week after week. According to the Bible however, the head of the church is Christ and all of us are to serve and edify one another. That doesn't mean the church is without leadership, but rather, elders are to lead by example and encourage the church to function as a body. If we want to use every member of our own bodies, isn't it reasonable to assume that Christ wants to use all of his body? We should all take part in teaching, singing, sharing, and exercising the gifts God has given to us - not just a select few. Every one of us should participate...

For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. (Romans 12:4-5)

2. A Variety of Ministry.
Have you ever thought because you're not a good speaker or preacher, that you're not qualified to share anything in the church? Since you can't sing like Sister So Ann So, you shouldn't sing? If so, where did those ideas come from? They didn't come from God! Let us never confuse talent with usefulness; For God is more apt to use a willing vessel than a talented one.

We should respect and make room for each other's gifting. According to the verse above, preaching and singing are only two of the many ways we can bless others. Ever been blessed by a friend's testimony of answered prayer? Have you ever been overwhelmed by a message in tongues and the interpretation that was just for you? God gave many gifts to his church and he desires and expects them to be used for His glory and for our edification.

And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. (Hebrews 10:24-25)

3. Edifying.
To edify is to literally “build.” We are to “build” each other up. To instruct and improve the mind in knowledge generally, and particularly in moral and religious knowledge, in faith and holiness.

There are probably a dozen ways we can and should minister to each other when we gather together as a church. In fact, we have a responsibility to edify each other as our head (Christ) dictates. We are to help each other be salt and light in a dark world - not for personal glory, but for the glory of God and the edifying of the whole church. God designed us all with purpose. That purpose is more than keeping a pew warm.

Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
(1 Corinthians 14:12)

Nothing Stays Hidden

Today's Old Testament reading involved some envy and turbulence between siblings. Joseph, the favorite son of Jacob, made himself the center of attention by sharing his dreams and telling on his brothers when they did wrong.

Side note:  A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.  (Proverbs 29:11)

Anyway, a day of opportunity came at a time when hatred toward Joseph was at a boiling point. Ten of the dreamer's brothers conspired to kill him. Ruben, the eldest, warned the angry mob to not kill him, but to throw him in a pit. He planned to come back for Joseph later. But then another option presented itself to the enterprising young men while Ruben was away...

And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood? Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.
(Genesis 37:25-27)

Joseph was long gone when Ruben returned. He was distressed at the news, but instead of going on a search and rescue mission, he helped to craft a story to sell to their father...

And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no. And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces. And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days. (Genesis 37:31-34)

Wow! Talk about a soap opera. “Like sands through the hourglass, so are the Days of Our Lives.”

Here's what struck me about this unbelievable family event:

  • The amount of anger and hatred these brothers had toward Joseph.
  • The fact that all ten brothers involved kept their mouth shut for decades. No one said a peep even when they saw the ongoing anguish and grief of their father.
  • How far God will allow things to go to bring about his will – and still be in control.
  • And the key point: Nothing stays hidden. Nothing just goes away.

God had great purpose for Joseph going to Egypt, but eventually the ten brothers would have to come clean for their cruel actions toward Joseph and their equally cruel deception toward their father. Imagine having to tell a frail, aging parent that the whole bloody coat story of years ago was a complete lie and the truth is you sold your brother, his favorite son, like a piece of property to some travelers. What a warm and cozy family chat that must have been. More wine, please!

I'll bet Lance Armstrong would agree that nothing stays hidden. Bill Clinton might nod his head at that too. Cain, Achan, King David, me, all of us, regardless of position, social status, financial reserves, good looks or connections, if we haven't realized it yet, we will eventually; Nothing stays hidden forever. Cover ups today are headlines tomorrow.

For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad. (
Mark 4:22)

Our God is a righteous God and won't allow wrongdoing to just get sweep under the rug. The rug will never be big enough. The best way to live is to first love God, then to love our neighbor as ourselves. If we do, we won't do anything to hurt our neighbor. However, if we fall short of that, then we need to make things right; first to God, then to any and all wronged parties. That's the right thing to do.

Hidden sin will make its way to the surface of our lives eventually. Sometimes in the weirdest, most unexpected, most uncomfortable, most ill-timed ways imaginable. It's a absolute guarantee...

But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.
(Numbers 32:23)

The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him. (Job 20:27)

May I make a suggestion? Let's make things right with those we've wronged as quickly as possible. Don't argue, don't scheme, don't put it off. Just do it. In my experience, God offers brief windows of opportunity for us to take advantage of His mercy and find peaceful and often times private resolve. If we humble ourselves and obey, we'll be right with both God and man – to the extent that we can be. If we don't, that window of mercy may close and the exposure later may be far more painful and much more public.

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.  (Proverbs 28:13)

God had big plans for Joseph and could have brought about those plans in a hundred different ways. His brothers didn't have to sell him like a slave of deceive Jacob. The fact that God can bring good out of any situation is a tribute to his greatness – not a justification for sin or a cover up. Remember, nothing stays hidden. Nothing.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.  (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14)
