What was your first reaction to that bit of news?
Did you laugh? Did you raise your eyebrows?
Did you get another reason to question your faith?
For me it was another sign of the times and a reminder that the Word of God has been under assault since the garden of Eden. Remember how the father of lies, disguised as a serpent, approached Eve? “Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?....” The devil was able to cast doubt into Eve's mind and got her to believe a lie. How did that work out for everyone? How many times has a so-called expert claimed something only to have it refuted shortly thereafter? Too many times to count.
The scriptures have been ridiculed, mocked and disregarded from the beginning, so this latest bit of “news” isn't news. It's a headline to grab attention, sell a story, and cast doubt. Unfortunately, many will doubt. Many doubted that Christ had risen from the dead even though he was standing right in front of them...
And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. (Matthew 28:17)
The real question I believe is this: Did it work on you? Did this rumor cause a tremor in your faith? Are you questioning your walk with God? If so, why?
Let me ask you this, what are the colors of the US flag? Are they really Red, White & Blue? Really? Are you 100% positive? How can you be so sure??? We're sure because we've seen the flag, saluted it or put our hand over our heart when reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. It's in our songs, in poems, featured in politics, on banners and found in cemeteries. Without a doubt our flag is red, white and blue. Our experience is our confidence. | |
It's the same way with God and his Word. If we are in the Word and his Word is in us, we will know the difference between truth and error.
Was Jesus married? Of course not. The church is his only bride and the marriage supper of the Lamb is still in preparation. It's important to remember that Jesus Christ wasn't just a regular guy and we shouldn't reduce him to mere flesh and blood like you and me. He was the Almighty God manifested in the flesh. He didn't come to start an earthly family; he came to die for our sins and to destroy the works of the devil.
Like many things in life, if we don't know something through and through, we'll have doubts. Which is why we must be regularly in the Word for ourselves. Second hand information doesn't create confidence.
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. (Hebrews 5:12-14)
Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
(2 Peter 3:3-4)
If we exercise ourselves in the scriptures, read it, study it, teach it, then we'll know it. We'll laugh at questions like, “Was Jesus married?” “Did Jesus have children?” "Was Jesus gay or does he condone homosexuality/sodomy?" We'll know what the Bible says and can hear a lie a mile away. We won't be shaken! Rather we can show others the truth. Which brings me to another point: Truth.
The New York Times isn't truth. TV News isn't truth. Science isn't truth. The internet isn't truth and neither is everything preached from a pulpit. There is only one truth: The Word of God and specifically the KVJ Bible...
Psalms 119:142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.
Proverbs 30:5-6 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
There will be more “discoveries” coming as we get closer to the coming of the Lord. Difficult times, storms of doubt, and fears will test us all. Everything that can be shaken will be shaken in heaven and earth. The way to be firm in our faith is to be grounded and settled in the scriptures.
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. (Matthew 7:24-27)
