PictureDid Jesus Claim To Be God?
Consider the unique properties of water for a moment. According to the conditions surrounding it, water can be an invisible vapor, a visible liquid, or hard, cold, breakable ice. This liquid can become vapor or ice, and return to liquid again, by simply changing the temperature; But it's all still water.

In Part 1 of this study, we read that there is only one God. He is an invisible, eternal Spirit, who fills heaven and earth. But is that all there is to God? Is God only an invisible Spirit? Let's take a look...

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
(1 Timothy 3:16)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made... And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.  (John 1:1-3; 14)

According to these and many other verses, the eternal, invisible, immortal Spirit became a visible, mortal man. Most of us believe that nothing is impossible with God, so this isn't a real stretch of the imagination. But what regularly blows my mind is why God would do this. The answer goes back to what God is: God is love (1 Jn. 4:8). Let's see how God fulfills his own prophecy...

Old Testament                                              New Testament

The Word of God

Genesis 3:8   And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
John 1:1-3; 14   In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made... And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

The Lamb of God

Genesis 22:7-8 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Emmanuel: God With Us

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Matthew 1:18-23 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

The Might God, The Everlasting Father

Isaiah 9:6   For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Godhead Study
Liquid, Ice, or Vapor; All Water
John 14:6-11   Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

A spirit doesn't have flesh and blood, but without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins and no redemption for us. God (The Invisible, Immortal Spirit) was manifested in the flesh (The Mortal, Visible, Flesh, Son) to die for our sins... In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. (Colossians 1:14-17)

Who Is God? A Study of the Godhead

PictureDid Jesus Clam To Be God?
When Jesus Christ walked the earth some 2000+ years ago, there was much confusion as to who he really was. There is still much confusion today as to who Christ the Son of God is and his relationship with God and the Holy Ghost. Out of the twelve disciples, only Peter understood who Jesus was and here's why...

When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven
.  (Matthew 16:13)

Understanding who Jesus Christ is requires revelation given from above. And revelation begins with the Word of God: The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. (Psalms 119:130)

Let's stay in the scriptures and let the Word of God describe God is to us.

Who Is God? What is God?

Jeremiah 23:24
Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.

John 4:24
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

God is a Spirit who fills heaven and earth. His Spirit is all around us.

How many Gods are there?

Deuteronomy 6:4
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

Isaiah 44:8
Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.

Malachi 2:10
Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

There is only one God. He is our creator and there is none beside him.

Is God a Trinity?

Nowhere in the scriptures is God ever called a "trinity" or "triune" in nature. And since God doesn't refer to himself as a trinity, perhaps we shouldn't either. Adding to the scriptures isn't wise and tends to create confusion.

Let's consider the attributes of God which may expand our understanding of who he is.

God is invisible:

1 John 4:12

No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

God who is a Spirit doesn't have a body:

Luke 24:39
Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

God Is Immortal - He Cannot Die:

1 Timothy 1:17

Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

God Cannot Lie:

Titus 1:2
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

Got Is All-Knowing

1 John 3:20
For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

God is Love:

1 John 4:16
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

God Is A Consuming Fire

Deuteronomy 4:24
For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.

There are many other scriptures that describe God but this is a great start. There is only one God and there is none beside him. God is a Spirit who knows everything about us past, present and future, yet loves us. He created the heavens and the earth by himself, yet cares for each of us. Our God is an awesome God, worthy of our respect, honor and our worship. Download a Free Bible Study about the Godhead on our Bible Study Page.

In Part 2, we'll look at scriptures about Christ in both the Old and New Testaments. May we have eyes to see, ears to hear and hearts to perceive things that we've never seen before!
