America, America, God shed his grace on thee...
I love America and was taught that it is exceptional. Not that we are superior people, but that our nation is unlike any other in the world primarily because of our freedoms. We can move freely about our country, have a big family, go into business for ourselves, succeed or fail depending upon how much work we're willing to put in to something and worship The Creator or something else as we choose. Is this remarkable? Ask someone from China, Cuba, Europe, South America or Russia. They may ask you how much you've had to drink.
If America isn't such a great place, then why do so many people every single day drive, walk, dig or climb over walls to get in? Why do they come here for medical treatment? Why is the United Nations building in New York? Perhaps they know that even our jails are better then some of their homes where they come from.
If America is a most unique and wondrous nation, then why is it so? If you could boil it down to a simple answer what would that answer be? I think most of us would say: Freedom. The follow up question then in my mind is: Where did this Freedom come from? How did it start?
I must confess that I didn't pay attention to history (or most any other subject) in high school. I was allergic to text books. Only in the last decade or so have I become interested in America's past, and recently I came upon a book at a yard sale that has really opened my eyes. I believe it was a gift from God to me not only for this time in my life, but for this time in America's life. Few books have had the impact that this one has on my heart and mind and I wholeheartedly recommend it to you. It's called The Light And The Glory and it chronicles the how, where, and why of Freedom and the founding of America.
Freedom is found in Jesus Christ: If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (John 8:36)
How do we realize that freedom? And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32)
Jesus Christ is the foundation of the church and the church is the foundation of America. The Bible was the core element of eduction, community, and government. Many educators and "great thinkers" down through the decades have tried to water down that truth, but it's still true. America was founded as a Christian nation, a "city set upon a hill" even though we've strayed far from our biblical founding.
If you're looking for an eye-opening book about the church in America, American exceptionalism, or even a deeper perspective into the role and function of church in society, grab a copy of The Light And The Glory. You can find it online, at the library, or even a yard sale. It may change the way you view your own personal responsibility to your generation. Caution: This book may cause a spiritual awakening and could lead to a revival in America!
If America, as Abraham Lincoln described is the last best hope of earth, then Christ and his church is the reason for that hope. Discover for yourself if God had and has a special plan for the United States of America!
